Portfolios are a securities grouping that allows you to track positions in a brokerage account. In Portfolio mobile, a portfolio is synonymous with a brokerage account. It may contain any number of stock, bond, option or other equity position as well as one or more cash accounts to represent cash in and out flows. Portfolios differ from Watchlists, in that securities in a Portfolio are typically real positions – they contain trading activity.
In landscape orientation the app will show you a list of all Portfolios on the left side with portfolio-specific data on the right. To select a portfolio, tap the list on the left side, or select it from the Portfolios popup menu accessible from the tab bar. In portrait orientation, you will only see portfolio data related to the selected portfolio; navigating between portfolios is best accomplished using the popup menu accessible by tapping the Portfolios tab bar item (shown below).
The Portfolio View presents value and performance for the selected portfolio. Some content views provide a condensed display that supports scrolling to reveal additional data. In the above image, for example, you may notice the PERFORMANCE label with a downward arrow. This indicates that the view can be scrolled to reveal performance data for the portfolio. Optionally, you can expand this view using the pinch gesture to show both value and performance simultaneously.
Look to the small toolbar (located within the content view) to locate tab options for displaying stocks, bonds, options, closed positions and cash accounts in the lower area of the content view. You will also find tab options there that control how your positions are displayed — you can view your positions in list, heatmap and pie chart forms.
The small arrows found in the toolbar allow you to expand the view, maximizing it’s space on screen. For example, tapping the left arrow icon will hide the list of Portfolios so that you can focus on Portfolio data only.
Savvy users can use the pinch gesture to expand and condense these content views to full screen size.
Look to the main toolbar along the side of the screen for configuration options for the selected portfolio, to add new portfolios and instruments, and to configure certain view options including what type of data is shown when listing positions.
You can update portfolio settings (name, currency, Broker Connect settings, etc), add instruments and more, using one of several toolbar items located along the side of the screen. Toolbar items are identified by their icons – the affected object type (Portfolio) appears as the larger part of the icon with the action as a badge at the lower right (eg. Add (‘+’), Edit (wrench), etc).
Tap the edit button to open the Portfolio Settings panel. This panel organizes settings related to the selected portfolio as well as View Settings that may pertain to the viewing of this portfolio (View Settings preference items are app-wide). Use this panel to change the portfolio’s name, currency, enable cash tracking, setup broker OFX credentials, configure market indices for performance comparison charting and more.
Portfolios can be added by tapping the “+” icon located in the main toolbar or by selecting “Add Portfolio…” from the Portfolios popup menu accessible from the tab bar.
Savvy users can double tap the list of portfolios to add a new one.
Portfolios can be deleted by selecting the portfolio and tapping the delete (trash can) icon found in the main toolbar. You can also delete portfolios by swiping across their name in the Portfolios list.
Savvy users can swipe across the portfolios list to delete portfolios.
Portfolios can contain one or more cash accounts for managing cash in and out flows. Typically, a single account is defined as the default cash account and is used for all trading activity. You can add additional cash accounts for tracking money market accounts, insurance policies and many other types of holdings. Portfolio mobile supports position-dependent cash accounting – each stock can be assigned to a specific cash account allowing you to maintain separate cash accountings within a single portfolio (shown below). Managing accounts and cash activity is discussed in greater detail in the section on Cash Accounts in the User Guide.
